South Dakota Highway Patrol Searching for Red Ford Pickup Involved in Hit-and-Run That Left Pedestrian Seriously Injured

BOX ELDER, S.D. — Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying a red Ford F-150 pickup truck involved in a hit-and-run collision that left a pedestrian seriously injured late Friday night, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 9:51 p.m. on November 1 in the 3700 block of North Elk Vale Road, officials said. The pickup truck struck a pedestrian and then fled the scene without stopping to help.

Vehicle Description Released by Investigators

Investigators believe the vehicle involved is a red 1997–2004 Ford F-150 with a broken passenger-side headlight and possibly a toolbox in the bed.

The driver is described as an older male with a long gray beard. Witnesses last saw the vehicle heading toward East Mall Drive in Box Elder shortly after the incident.

Authorities say the victim suffered serious injuries from the impact and was transported for medical treatment. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

Public Assistance Requested

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is urging anyone who may have seen the vehicle or has information about the driver to come forward immediately.

“If you know this vehicle, or have any information about it, please contact the South Dakota Highway Patrol at 605-394-2286,” the agency said in a public appeal.

Officials shared surveillance footage showing the vehicle traveling along a dimly lit roadway near the time of the collision. The footage appears to capture headlights from a single truck moving away from the scene before disappearing into the distance.

Community Urged to Stay Alert

Law enforcement officers are canvassing nearby areas for additional security footage that might provide clearer identification of the truck or license plate. Residents and local businesses near Box Elder and Rapid City are encouraged to review any doorbell or surveillance recordings from the night of November 1.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol thanked residents for their cooperation and urged everyone to report any sightings that could help locate the suspect.

“Every tip helps us keep our roads safer,” the agency added, using the hashtag #keepSDsafe to promote community vigilance.

Anyone with information should contact South Dakota Highway Patrol at 605-394-2286 or local law enforcement.
