California Wedding Crasher Steals $80,000 Gift Box From Newlyweds During Reception
GLENDALE, Calif. — A California couple’s dream day turned into heartbreak after a wedding crasher stole a gift box containing between $80,000 and $100,000 in cash and checks, slipping out with the money during their reception.
Thief Blends In With Guests
According to surveillance footage, the suspect walked into the venue through the front doors, mingling with guests and even chatting with the bartender to avoid suspicion. He stayed for nearly two hours, waiting for the perfect moment. Once guests hit the dance floor, the thief seized his opportunity, grabbing the gift box and fleeing.
The couple told investigators that the stolen box also contained dozens of handwritten notes and cards, which they now may never see again.
Getaway Car and Accomplice
Police believe the thief wasn’t working alone. According to witness statements, a car was parked in an alley behind the venue.
“He grabbed the box, the getaway car opened the front door for him, he ran right in, closed the door and they drove off,” the groom said.
Authorities are treating the case as grand theft and suspect the detailed planning suggests this may not have been the thief’s first wedding heist.
Public Reaction: Outrage and Jokes
News of the theft sparked outrage online, but some reactions on social media surprised many. One commenter wrote: “Found my new gig,” while another added, “To be honest with you, that’s genius.”
Others were more shocked at the lack of security: “$80,000‼!? In cash in a BOX!? & no one was watching it?” one person asked in disbelief.
Speculation also grew that the theft may have been an inside job, with someone at the wedding tipping off the thief about the unusually large amount of money collected.
Wedding Planner Weighs In
A local wedding planner said the theft highlights why couples need to be extra careful with monetary gifts.
“As a wedding planner, I always make sure that the card or money box is where I can see it. Once dinner ends and dancing begins, I keep it with me and give it to the couple after the party,” the planner explained.
Unfortunately, those precautions weren’t in place that night, leaving the newlyweds devastated and the bride reportedly in tears.
Police Investigation
The Glendale Police Department is reviewing security footage and gathering leads, but as of Friday no arrests had been announced. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact them immediately.
Officials added that with the amount of money stolen and the apparent planning involved, the suspects could face serious prison time if caught.
