Chicago Father Pistol-Whipped and Robbed in Front of Daughter on Halloween Night
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — A Chicago father is recovering after being pistol-whipped, robbed, and carjacked in front of his young daughter on Halloween evening, in a terrifying encounter that has shaken both the family and their neighborhood.
Halloween Turns Violent in Broad Daylight
According to Chicago police, 42-year-old Ting Chui had parked his SUV and was helping his daughter out of the back seat when three armed men ambushed him on the 2100 block of West 21st Place. Surveillance footage shows the suspects running across the street before striking Chui in the head with a gun, knocking him into a fence.
His daughter, who was standing just a few feet away, began crying as the assault unfolded. “She was actually crying during the event,” Chui told reporters. “I couldn’t really help her — I was pretty helpless myself, but she’s getting better.”
Suspects Fled with Vehicle and Personal Belongings
Police said one suspect continued to hold Chui down while another stole his belongings, including his wallet and phone. The third suspect then jumped into the SUV and drove off with the others. The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned several miles away.
All three suspects were described as Black males, approximately 20 years old, according to the police report. Investigators are reviewing nearby surveillance footage for additional leads.
Victim Speaks Out Amid Frustration and Fear
The attack has left Chui shaken and deeply concerned for his family’s safety. “You never think something like this will happen in front of your kid,” he said. “I just wanted to protect her, but I couldn’t do anything.”
Neighbors have expressed outrage over the brazen daylight assault, calling for stronger police patrols and faster action to address the city’s rising carjacking incidents. Chicago police data shows carjackings have surged citywide in recent months, with many targeting unsuspecting families and delivery drivers.

Police Continue to Investigate
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the Halloween night carjacking to contact Area Three Detectives or submit an anonymous tip to CPD’s tip line. A cash reward may be available for information leading to the suspects’ arrest.
The Chicago Police Department has reminded residents to remain vigilant, especially when entering or exiting vehicles, and to immediately report any suspicious activity.
