Man Arrested for DUI in Crash That Killed Anderson County Detective
ANDERSON COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA — Authorities say a man has been arrested and charged with felony DUI after a crash that killed a longtime Anderson County detective on Wednesday afternoon.
Arrest and Charges
The South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed that Douglas H. Lueck was arrested and charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death.
The crash happened just before 1:30 p.m. on Anderson Drive at Beaverdam Road in Williamston, when a car collided with a motorcycle. The victim was identified as Detective Mark Garrett, 56, of the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.
Remembering Detective Garrett
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office released a statement honoring Garrett, describing him as a man who could connect with anyone through humor and kindness.
“Detective Mark Garrett had a signature personality, filled with an abundance of stories, jokes that could make anyone laugh, and a disposition that made any newcomer instantly feel like family,” the statement read.
Garrett began his public service career in the fire service before moving into law enforcement in 2009. He served with multiple Upstate departments, including Clemson Police, Williamston Police, and Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.
He later joined the Criminal Investigations Division, where he helped establish the Cold Case Unit and earned recognition as Detective of the Quarter twice in the past year.
A Legacy Beyond Law Enforcement
Garrett’s colleagues emphasized that his proudest roles were those within his family. He was a husband, grandfather, and father — including to Deputy Hunter Garrett, his son and fellow officer.
“Our hearts are extremely heavy as we know our friend, Detective Garrett, had a far reach within the Upstate,” the sheriff’s office said. “You always had a story to share, and we’ll never stop sharing yours, Detective Garrett.”
Community Impact
Garrett’s death has shaken law enforcement agencies across the Upstate, where he was widely respected for his service and dedication.
Meanwhile, Lueck remains in custody as the case moves forward.
