East Central Florida Beaches Warn of Rip Current Risk and Lightning Threat Into the Weekend
MELBOURNE, Fla. — Beachgoers across East Central Florida are being urged to use caution this weekend as rip currents and afternoon thunderstorms increase the risk of dangerous conditions from Daytona Beach to Vero Beach.
Breezy Winds Fuel Rip Currents
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, winds up to 25 mph are making surf hazardous along the Treasure Coast and central shoreline. A moderate rip current risk remains in effect, with lifeguards stressing that swimmers stay in guarded areas only.
Rain chances will stay low inland on Friday but climb to 40% along the coast.
Lightning Danger Returns
By Saturday and Sunday, isolated afternoon thunderstorms are expected to redevelop, with lightning posing the greatest threat to outdoor activities.
Forecasters warn that moisture levels will rise further by Monday, pushing storm coverage up to 50% across Orlando, Daytona Beach, Melbourne, and Fort Pierce.
Residents are encouraged to delay outdoor plans when storms approach and to keep devices charged in case of brief power outages.
