Pedestrian Struck and Killed on East Independence Boulevard in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A pedestrian was killed late Sunday night after being struck on one of Charlotte’s busiest highways, according to police.
Deadly Collision on East Independence Boulevard
Authorities said the incident happened just before 10 p.m. on August 24, along East Independence Boulevard near North Sharon Amity Road. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and Medic crews responded to the scene, confirming the pedestrian had died. No other injuries were immediately reported.
Investigation Focused on SUV
Investigators appeared to be centering their work around a white SUV at the crash site. Police have not yet confirmed whether the driver of that vehicle will face charges.
Second Crash Involving Police Vehicle
Roughly 90 minutes after the fatal collision, a second crash occurred on the same stretch of highway. That incident involved a police vehicle and another car. Medic reported that one person was taken to the hospital, though it remains unclear whether the injured person was an officer. Authorities have not confirmed whether the two crashes were connected.
Road Closures and Community Impact
East Independence Boulevard, also known as Highway 74, was closed for several hours while crews worked both crash scenes. The roadway has since reopened, though the investigation into the fatal pedestrian strike is ongoing.
Local residents say the corridor is one of Charlotte’s busiest traffic arteries and has long been the site of frequent collisions, raising continued concerns about pedestrian safety along the highway.
