Westbound Lanes of I-26 Reopen After Deadly Overnight Crash in Charleston
CHARLESTON, S.C. — The westbound lanes of Interstate 26 were reopened early Monday after a deadly overnight crash forced Charleston Police to close the roadway for several hours.
Crash Reported Near Leatherman Terminal
According to Charleston Police, the incident happened around 2:43 a.m. near Exit 218 by the Hugh Leatherman Terminal. Officers said a single vehicle was involved in the crash, which led to an immediate closure of the westbound lanes.
Traffic was diverted off the interstate as emergency crews worked at the scene. The South Carolina Department of Transportation’s live camera feed showed vehicles being redirected around the affected area.
Road Reopened Before Morning Commute
Authorities confirmed the roadway was cleared and reopened just before 5:15 a.m., restoring traffic flow for morning commuters. Police have not released details on what caused the crash or whether any additional passengers were in the vehicle at the time.
