Giant Python Found Near South Carolina School Campus in Newberry County

PROSPERITY, S.C. – A giant albino python roaming near Mid-Carolina High School in Newberry County was safely captured, bringing an unsettling incident to a close in the town of Prosperity.

According to Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster, the snake was discovered slithering near the school campus. Fortunately, Warren Gallman and several friends spotted the python and managed to secure it before it could pose a threat to the community.

Albino Python Believed to Be Abandoned Pet

Photos shared by law enforcement showed three individuals holding the large reptile, though the exact size of the snake has not been confirmed. Sheriff Foster stated that the python is likely an exotic pet that was released, adding that this particular type of snake is not native to the region.

“It is believed this was someone’s pet and it was released,” Foster said. “They’re brave people and great Americans.”

The incident has sparked concern among residents, especially due to the snake’s proximity to a school campus.

Authorities Caution Against Releasing Exotic Animals

Although South Carolina does not currently face a python invasion like Florida—where such snakes are now considered invasive and subject to bounty programs—wildlife experts warn that releasing exotic pets can have dangerous consequences for both the public and the environment.

There has been no official word yet on what will happen to the captured python, but the case has once again highlighted the need for responsible pet ownership and stricter enforcement around exotic animal regulations.
