Charleston’s Most Underrated Meal Comes From a Beloved Food Truck
CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA – Charleston’s food scene is known for its seafood-rich Lowcountry cuisine, but one of the city’s most underrated meals doesn’t come from a fine dining restaurant — it comes from a humble food truck on Johns Island.
Maine Seafood, Southern Setting
Since 2015, the Maine Line Seafood truck has been a fixture along Betsy Kerrison Parkway, operated by friends and business partners Jacob Bichrest and Chuck Buser. Bichrest’s family harvests lobster from the waters of Harpswell, Maine, which is then brought south multiple times each week, ensuring that the truck’s seafood is as fresh as it gets.
The truck serves everything from fried shrimp to fish tacos, and even includes cheeseburgers and chicken tenders for those less inclined toward seafood.
The Lobster Roll That Stole the Show
For many fans, however, there is one standout menu item: the lobster roll. Served in a thick, split-top bun, the roll is piled high with tender chunks of lobster, lightly dressed with mayo or drenched in warm butter, depending on preference. Each order comes with potato chips, making it a simple but indulgent beachside meal.
“It’s simple, decadent, and just plain perfect,” one loyal customer said, describing the roll as their go-to order after a day on nearby Kiawah Island’s beaches.
A Local Favorite for Beach Days
The truck has shifted locations slightly over the years but has remained a trusted stop for locals and vacationers alike. Picnic tables shaded with umbrellas make it a perfect place to sit and enjoy a roll fresh off the truck, though many fans admit they can’t resist eating in their cars on the way home.
Charleston may be famous for its creative dining scene, but Maine Line’s lobster roll has earned a reputation as the quintessential underrated meal of the area.
