North Carolina Man Arrested for Windsor Locks Robbery Involving Cash App Holdup

North Carolina — A 29-year-old man suspected of robbing a person at gunpoint outside a Connecticut bar last year has been located and arrested in North Carolina, Windsor Locks police confirmed this week.

The suspect, identified as Dontae Willis-Green Malik, is currently in custody on unrelated charges in North Carolina. Authorities in Connecticut are now working to have him extradited to face charges stemming from the May 13, 2023 armed robbery at the Blackboard Cafe on Spring Street.

Victim Targeted in Bar Parking Lot

The incident occurred just after 2:15 a.m. when the victim, who had been drinking at the bar, was approached in the parking lot by a man asking for money. After the victim offered $10, the suspect allegedly asked if he had “Cash App,” a digital payment platform.

Police say the situation escalated quickly.

The man pulled a silver, semi-automatic handgun and pressed the barrel into the victim’s lower abdomen. He demanded the victim’s money and forced him to provide Cash App codes to transfer funds digitally.

The robber also reportedly claimed he was on the run from a murder in North Carolina, showing off an ankle monitoring bracelet. Before fleeing, he told the victim the firearm was a .40-caliber weapon. He was last seen driving away in a dark-colored SUV.

Police Traced Suspect to Nearby Hotel

Investigators identified Malik as the primary suspect shortly after the crime. He was believed to be staying at a hotel on Route 75 in Windsor Locks at the time of the robbery.

Windsor Locks police secured an arrest warrant in December 2023, charging him with:

  • First-degree robbery
  • First-degree threatening
  • Second-degree larceny

But Malik had already left the state by then. Police say he resurfaced recently in Raleigh, North Carolina, which was listed as his last known address.

Extradition Proceedings Underway

Though the exact nature of the charges Malik now faces in North Carolina have not been disclosed, Windsor Locks authorities confirmed they have been in contact with law enforcement there. They are actively working to bring him back to Connecticut to stand trial.

Malik remains held in North Carolina custody pending possible extradition.
