North Carolina Man Dies in Drowning at Colchuck Lake Despite Extensive Rescue Efforts

North Carolina — A 30-year-old man from North Carolina drowned Sunday evening at Colchuck Lake in Washington’s Enchantments region, despite urgent rescue efforts involving multiple agencies and specialized equipment.

According to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, the incident was first reported at 7:16 p.m. on August 3 via a satellite text-to-911 alert. The caller reported the victim had been underwater for about five minutes and that bystanders were attempting CPR.

Rapid Multi-Agency Response to Remote Location

Due to the lake’s remote location in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, rescuers faced significant challenges in reaching the scene quickly. The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue unit was immediately activated and requested a hoist-capable helicopter from the Washington State Department of Emergency Management.

The U.S. Army Air Ambulance Detachment (Yakima Dustoff) responded, arriving at 8:46 p.m. A medic was lowered to the site by hoist to assist on scene.

In addition, six volunteers from Chelan County Search and Rescue and two sheriff’s SAR deputies made their way to the lake to aid in recovery efforts.

Victim Pronounced Dead at Leavenworth Fish Hatchery

Despite the rapid mobilization of ground and air units, the man could not be revived. He was transported to the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery, where Cascade Medical paramedics pronounced him dead.

Authorities have not yet released the man’s name pending family notification. The cause of the drowning remains under investigation.
