Excessive Heat and Severe Weather Threatening Michigan This Week With Triple Digit Heat Index Values and Destructive Straight Line Winds Wednesday Through Thursday

MICHIGAN — A dangerous and multi-layered weather week is unfolding across Michigan beginning June 8, with excessive heat dominating Wednesday and Thursday before back-to-back severe weather episodes develop late both days, bringing the threat of destructive straight-line winds and strong thunderstorms to heavily populated areas of the state.

The Heat Threat Wednesday and Thursday

Temperatures on both Wednesday, June 10, and Thursday, June 11, are expected to reach approximately 90°F across much of Michigan — running more than 10 degrees above normal for this time of year. The combination of that heat with dew points climbing into the mid-70s will push heat index values to triple digits in the most populated regions of the state.

These conditions create serious risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for outdoor workers, elderly residents, and those without reliable air conditioning during the peak afternoon hours.

Severe Weather Both Evenings

Beyond the heat, strong atmospheric forcing and favorable upper-level support will be in place to trigger severe thunderstorm episodes late Wednesday night and again late Thursday. The main hazard for both events is damaging and potentially destructive straight-line winds, capable of downing trees, snapping power lines, and causing widespread property damage across affected areas.

Thursday carries an urgent notice designation, with the SPC already listing semi-high severe thunderstorm probabilities for that period — a significant signal this far in advance of the event.

The Rest of the Week

Monday brings hot conditions with evening storms developing to the southwest. Tuesday remains hot with pop-up storm chances. Friday offers general clearing with only a couple of storm chances across the north. Saturday turns active again with strong to severe storms possible as temperatures warm heading into the weekend.

The week as a whole represents one of the most weather-active seven-day periods Michigan has seen this season, with heat and storm threats overlapping across multiple consecutive days.

What Residents Should Do Now

Michigan residents should finalize shelter plans for severe weather before Wednesday arrives, stay hydrated throughout the heat peak, and avoid extended outdoor exposure during afternoon hours on both Wednesday and Thursday.
