Severe Thunderstorms Tracking Toward Arkansas From Oklahoma and Kansas With Tornado Warnings Possible Across Western Regions Late Friday Night

ARKANSAS — Severe thunderstorms are headed toward Arkansas Friday evening, with forecasters tracking two separate storm threats as of 6 PM. A lone but lightning-filled storm was already impacting the Northwest Arkansas area near Fayetteville and Fort Smith, while the main severe weather event was still organizing across Oklahoma and Kansas and tracking southeast toward Arkansas with an expected arrival between 11 PM and 2 AM.

Radar imagery captured at 5:46 PM showed the initial storm circled near Fayetteville and Fort Smith, while the more significant storm complex was highlighted across the Oklahoma City and Wichita corridor with arrows indicating its southeast track directly toward Arkansas overnight.

Two Separate Storm Threats Friday Evening

The first storm, described as a lone but noisy cell packed with frequent lightning, was already moving through Northwest Arkansas at the time of the 6 PM update. This storm had the potential to impact Razorback baseball and other outdoor evening activities across the Fayetteville area, though it was not considered the primary severe weather concern for the night.

The real threat is the larger and more organized storm system forming across Oklahoma and Kansas. This complex was tracking southeast and expected to arrive across western and northwest Arkansas closer to 11 PM through 2 AM Saturday morning, bringing the most significant severe weather potential of the evening.

Tornado Warnings Possible Across Western Arkansas

Forecasters could not rule out a couple of tornado warnings developing across western and northwest Arkansas as the main storm system arrives overnight. Strong winds are also expected with the incoming complex, making this a multi-hazard severe weather event for communities along the Arkansas-Oklahoma border region and points further into the state.

Communities including Fort Smith, Fayetteville, Mena, and surrounding areas across western Arkansas are in the most direct path of the incoming system and should remain weather-aware through the overnight hours until the threat clears.

Beneficial Rainfall Expected Alongside the Storm Threat

Despite the severe weather concerns, forecasters noted that the incoming storm system also carries the potential to deliver beneficial rainfall across much of Arkansas overnight and into Saturday morning. The state has been experiencing drier than normal conditions, and any widespread rainfall from this system would be welcomed even as residents remain alert to the severe weather threat accompanying it.

Residents across Arkansas are urged to keep weather radios and alert apps active through the overnight hours and avoid outdoor activities between 11 PM and 2 AM as the main storm complex pushes through the region.
