Baltimore Teen Sentenced to 15 Years After Fatal Carroll County Hit-and-Run Involving Stolen Vehicle, Prosecutors Say

MARYLAND — A 19-year-old Baltimore man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty in a deadly hit-and-run crash in Carroll County involving a stolen vehicle, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office for Carroll County. Officials say the August 2024 collision killed motorcyclist Terry Crowl, whose family has waited more than a year for the case to move through the courts.

How the Fatal Crash Happened

Authorities reported that on August 20, 2024, Darius Bond, 19, was driving a stolen vehicle when he lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic, and struck Crowl’s motorcycle, causing fatal injuries.
Investigators say the vehicle Bond was operating had been stolen out of Baltimore City two days earlier as part of an active car-theft ring.

Witnesses told law enforcement they saw Bond and another occupant approach Crowl’s body before fleeing the scene, leaving the victim on the roadside.

Stolen Van Reported After the Crash

Shortly after the collision, a nearby resident reported that their van had been stolen, an incident believed to be connected to Bond’s attempt to leave the area.
Hours later, the same van was spotted by a license plate reader in Baltimore City and was recovered by authorities.

Investigation Leads to Key Evidence

Detectives from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office used surveillance footage and DNA evidence to confirm that Bond had been the driver of the stolen vehicle at the time of the fatal crash.
Prosecutors emphasized that this forensic evidence was instrumental in securing the conviction.

Sentence Handed Down

Bond has now been sentenced to 15 years in state prison, bringing an end to a case that law enforcement described as “tragic, preventable, and deeply unsettling” due to the combination of stolen vehicles, reckless driving, and the loss of an innocent motorist.
