Series of Quakes Near Coronaca

The most recent tremor struck Wednesday evening around 7:55 p.m., registering at magnitude 1.6. It followed two earlier quakes earlier in the week:

  • Monday, 11:30 p.m. – A 2.2 magnitude quake hit about 2.4 miles north-northwest of Coronaca.
  • Tuesday, 3:08 a.m. – A 1.7 magnitude quake was recorded 3.1 miles southeast of Coronaca.

All three earthquakes occurred within roughly a 48-hour span.

Officials Monitoring Activity

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division confirmed the quakes and shared updates on social media, noting that while small, these tremors are part of a pattern the state has seen in recent years. Greenwood County, along with nearby regions, has experienced occasional clusters of minor seismic activity.

So far, no damage or injuries have been reported.

Earthquake Activity in South Carolina

Though not widely known for seismic events, South Carolina is no stranger to earthquakes. The state’s strongest recorded quake, a 7.0 magnitude event in Charleston in 1886, remains one of the most powerful earthquakes to ever strike the eastern United States.

Modern quakes in the region are typically small, but experts say even minor tremors can remind residents of the state’s underlying seismic risks.

Community Response

Some Greenwood County residents reported feeling light shaking during the late-night tremors earlier this week, though many others slept through the events. Local officials continue to emphasize preparedness in case larger events occur.
