Severe Thunderstorms in Malheur County Bring Penny-Sized Hail and 60 MPH Wind Gusts

MALHEUR COUNTY, Ore. — The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning Monday evening for parts of Malheur County, cautioning residents about penny-sized hail and dangerous wind gusts up to 60 mph.

Storm Details

At 6:57 p.m., NWS forecasters reported a severe thunderstorm located over Iron Point, about 20 miles north of Rome, moving north at 35 mph.

The system is expected to cause hail up to 0.75 inches in diameter and damaging winds strong enough to affect roofs, siding, and trees.

Hazards and Safety Risks

The combination of hail and high winds can create hazardous travel conditions and damage to property. Officials warned residents to remain alert for falling branches, flying debris, and power outages.

Motorists in particular are urged to:

  • Reduce speed on slick or hail-covered roads
  • Avoid driving near tall trees or power lines
  • Pull over safely if visibility drops during the storm

Looking Ahead

The warning was in effect until 7:15 p.m. Monday, though forecasters caution that additional storm activity could continue into the night.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather alerts and seek shelter indoors during periods of strong wind or hail.
