North Carolina Weather Alert Issued: Up to 3 Inches of Rain Expected Through Sunday
RALEIGH, N.C. — Central North Carolina faces a wet weekend ahead as forecasters warn of heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding that could continue through Sunday night.
Forecast Totals
The National Weather Service in Raleigh said a non-tropical trough will bring periods of steady rainfall across much of the state. Central counties could see up to 3 inches of rain before the system exits late Sunday.
Localized flooding is possible in areas that experience heavier downpours, especially in low-lying and flood-prone spots.
Severe Weather Risk
Meteorologists said isolated severe storms may also develop Friday evening, with gusty winds being the primary threat. Drivers are urged to remain cautious on slick roads and to prepare for sudden changes in visibility during storms.
Watching the Tropics
In addition to this weekend’s rain, forecasters are closely monitoring a tropical wave near Hispaniola. The system could develop into a tropical depression as early as Friday or Saturday while moving toward the Bahamas.
If the system strengthens and tracks closer to the southeastern U.S., North Carolina could see additional impacts early next week. However, the National Hurricane Center stressed it is too soon to determine whether the state will be directly affected.
Residents Urged to Stay Alert
Officials are encouraging residents to monitor updated forecasts throughout the weekend. With both heavy rainfall and tropical activity in play, forecasters say conditions may shift quickly.
