Mobile Home Blown Off Trailer by 70 mph Winds on Basnight Bridge
OUTER BANKS, N.C. — High winds reaching 65 to 70 mph forced part of a modular home off its trailer on the Marc Basnight Bridge Monday afternoon, shutting down traffic until recovery crews could clear the scene.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) confirmed that the incident happened around 1:38 p.m., when the mobile home overturned and struck the bridge’s railing. The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported that a commercial vehicle was hauling the structure north on N.C. 12, near Oregon Inlet, when the gusts ripped it from the trailer.
Bridge Closed for Hours
The accident forced the closure of the Basnight Bridge, a critical route along the Outer Banks. Officials described the recovery efforts as “difficult and dangerous” because of the same high winds that caused the accident.
The Dare County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control as troopers cleared vehicles from the bridge. Crews worked for hours before finally removing the damaged home around 8 p.m., allowing all lanes to reopen shortly after 9:22 p.m..
Safety Concerns Highlighted
The event underscores the risks of transporting large structures in coastal conditions where sudden wind gusts can pose serious dangers. NCDOT officials stressed that heavy-haul operators should exercise extreme caution in high-wind advisories, particularly on exposed spans like the Basnight Bridge.
