Florida Man Opens Fire on Friend Over $40 Phone Bill Debt in Liberty City, Police Say
MIAMI, FLORIDA — Police in Miami say a longtime friendship turned violent when a 56-year-old man allegedly shot his friend multiple times during a dispute over a $40 phone bill. The argument erupted inside a Liberty City apartment building, leaving one man seriously injured and another under arrest.
Heated Argument Turns Deadly Serious
According to police, the confrontation began when the victim approached Steven Green, known locally as “Blackey,” to ask about the small debt. The two men argued about the unpaid $40, which reportedly stemmed from a shared phone bill. Witnesses said the discussion became heated as they moved into the stairwell of the building.
Investigators said that during the argument, Green pulled out a handgun. The victim told police he questioned Green, asking, “What, are you going to shoot me?” Moments later, Green allegedly fired six shots into the man’s abdomen before running away.
Suspect Arrested After Police Search
Authorities located Green shortly after the shooting and took him into custody without incident. Miami police confirmed that he faces multiple felony charges related to the attack. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.
Detectives said the shooting appears to have been fueled by the argument over the unpaid debt. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not yet disclosed whether the firearm used was legally owned.
Neighborhood Shocked by Violence Over Small Debt
Residents in Liberty City expressed disbelief that a disagreement over such a small amount could end in gunfire. “It’s crazy how something so minor can lead to a shooting,” one resident told local media. “People here are tired of the violence—it doesn’t make sense anymore.”
Police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to contact the Miami Police Department as they continue to review surveillance footage and witness statements.
