Columbus Educator’s Family Still Seeking Answers Two Years After Unsolved Murder
COLUMBUS, Ga. – It has been more than two years since the tragic shooting of Dr. James McTyre Jr., a beloved Columbus educator and counselor. Yet for his family and friends, the pain remains as raw as the unanswered questions surrounding his murder.
Beloved Educator Gunned Down After Morning Walk
On the morning of February 26, 2023, McTyre stopped at a Circle K gas station on Wynnton Road after completing his usual walk at Lakebottom Park. Moments later, the 62-year-old was fatally shot multiple times while still in his vehicle. The car then veered off the road, crashing into bushes along Britt Avenue.
McTyre’s murder shocked the Columbus community, particularly those who knew him through his lifelong work in education and family services. He had served as a professor, a school counselor, and a dedicated member of the Department of Family and Children Services.
A Life Dedicated to Helping Others
Family members describe McTyre as a kind and prayerful man who found purpose in helping others — especially children and struggling families. His sister, Toni, who has been one of the most vocal advocates for justice, reflected on the emotional toll the loss has taken on her.
“I love my brother dearly. He was my heart, and when he left a part of me left,” she said tearfully.
McTyre was also an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, where he played a role in mentoring young men in the community.
Investigation Remains Unresolved Despite Leads
Columbus Police Department Detective Emily Stice confirmed that shell casings were recovered at the scene, along with surveillance video from nearby businesses. But despite these leads, the person responsible for McTyre’s murder has not been identified.
The lack of closure has left the family in anguish. Childhood friend Gladys Williams Tillmon echoed the plea for answers:
“You think it might not be of value, but it will be. Please reach out, please put our hearts at ease.”
Community Urged to Speak Up
Authorities are continuing to seek tips from the public. The family and police believe someone may have witnessed something or knows crucial details that could help solve the case. Detective Stice is still assigned to the investigation, and both named and anonymous tips are welcomed.
Anyone with information related to the murder of Dr. James McTyre Jr. is urged to contact the Columbus Police Department or reach out directly to Detective Emily Stice. Even the smallest detail could prove valuable in finally delivering justice and peace for McTyre’s grieving family.
