Three Injured in Wrong-Way Crash on I-75 Near Detroit–Hamtramck Border
DETROIT, Mich. — Michigan State Police are investigating a wrong-way crash on I-75 that left three people injured early Saturday morning near the Detroit–Hamtramck border.
Authorities say the crash occurred around 5:00 a.m. when troopers received several reports of a Dodge Durango traveling southbound in the northbound lanes near Holbrook Avenue. Moments later, the vehicle collided head-on with a Subaru traveling northbound.
Multiple Victims Trapped in Wreckage
When troopers arrived, they found both occupants of the Subaru trapped inside the vehicle. Fire crews worked to free the victims before they were transported to a nearby hospital.
A 26-year-old driver from Detroit was hospitalized with broken bones and possible internal injuries, while a 65-year-old passenger, also from Detroit, was treated for internal injuries, police confirmed.
The 38-year-old male driver of the Durango suffered head injuries and was also transported to a local hospital.
Alcohol Believed to Be a Factor
Investigators say alcohol may have played a role in the crash. Michigan State Police Lieutenant Mike Shaw said in a statement that the investigation remains ongoing.
“The freeway was closed for about four hours for cleanup,” Shaw said. “We want to remind drivers not to get behind the wheel impaired — there are so many other ways to get around safely.”
Road Closed for Hours During Investigation
Traffic along I-75 was shut down for approximately four hours as troopers documented the scene and cleared debris from the roadway.
Authorities are now working to determine where the wrong-way driver entered the interstate and whether additional citations will be filed.
