South Carolina Fireworks Buyers Face Higher Prices and Slimmer Shelves This July 4th
FORT MILL, S.C. – As South Carolina residents gear up for Independence Day celebrations, many are finding higher fireworks prices and fewer choices at local retailers — the result of tariffs and supply chain delays affecting shipments from China.
At Davey Jones Fireworks, one of the region’s busiest shops during the July 4th season, the impact has already been felt.
“That was the first thing we noticed,” said shopper Michael Sofio. “There weren’t as many selections as last year. And the prices went up a little bit.”
Why Are Fireworks More Expensive This Year?
Most consumer fireworks sold in the U.S. are imported from China, and according to store officials, tariffs on Chinese goods have contributed to rising costs.
Cashier Roger Aiton explained that the store took proactive steps by ordering early, trying to lock in prices before the tariffs kicked in.
“We got our merchandise before the tariffs went into effect, so we were able to maintain sales close to what they were in previous years,” Aiton said.
Still, not every item made it through the shipping pipeline. Aiton noted that supply gaps were inevitable, and some popular items were harder to restock this season.
Shipping Costs Also a Factor
In addition to tariffs, shipping disruptions and costs continue to drive price variability. Aiton pointed to display cases showing price fluctuations of several dollars — all due to logistical hiccups.
“It’s all about family getting together, celebrating our country,” he said. “We try to work around it and keep things available.”
Fireworks Safety Reminders for Families
As families stock up for backyard celebrations, Aiton emphasized the importance of firework safety, urging residents to keep a bucket of water or hose nearby when setting off products.
“It’s not just about lighting them up — it’s about keeping everyone safe while we do it,” he added.
The message is clear: while fireworks may cost more and options may be fewer this year, safety and family remain at the heart of the tradition.
