Measles Outbreak Alert

Measles Outbreak Expands in South Carolina; Child’s Exposure Traced to Greenville Gym

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Health officials say South Carolina’s measles outbreak continues to grow, with five new confirmed cases this week and one child’s exposure traced to a Greenville gym, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH).

Child’s Exposure Linked to Greenville Gym

The SCDPH said the latest exposure occurred at Crunch Fitness on South Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville, where a child who later tested positive for measles was present on Sept. 30 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Officials are urging anyone who visited the facility during that time to monitor for symptoms and seek medical attention if they believe they were exposed.
Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, rash, red eyes, and runny nose, which can develop up to 21 days after exposure.

Outbreak Grows Across the Upstate

As of Tuesday, 16 total measles cases have been confirmed in South Carolina this year — 12 of them linked to an outbreak in Spartanburg County.
More than 130 students from Global Academy and Fairforest Elementary School remain under home quarantine after confirmed exposures at both schools.

The SCDPH said containment measures are in place, but community exposure remains a concern, especially in public spaces such as gyms, schools, and childcare centers.

Health Officials Urge Vaccination and Awareness

Medical experts emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective defense against measles. The MMR vaccine — which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella — is 95% effective after one dose and nearly 99% effective after two doses.

“Parents should ensure their children are fully immunized, especially given the rise in preventable illnesses across the region,” health officials said.

Public Advised to Stay Alert

Those who suspect exposure should contact their healthcare provider before visiting a medical facility to prevent potential spread.
The SCDPH continues to track contacts and test additional individuals across Greenville and Spartanburg counties.

Residents can find updated information and health advisories through the South Carolina Department of Public Health website and local health departments.
