Freeman Park Closed Until Further Notice Due to Dangerous Weather Conditions

CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. — The Town of Carolina Beach has temporarily closed Freeman Park to all vehicular traffic as rough surf, strong winds, and high tides make driving conditions unsafe along the northern end of the island.

Coastal Storm Forces Temporary Closure

Town officials announced the decision Thursday afternoon, citing a developing low-pressure system and higher-than-normal tides impacting the Carolina coast. The closure comes amid an ongoing coastal flood advisory and a stretch of unstable weather that has created dangerous conditions for beachgoers and off-road vehicles.

In a Facebook statement, town leaders said the park will remain closed “until further notice” and will reopen only once conditions improve. “The area will be reopened once officials determine it is safe for driving,” the post read.

Weather Impact and Public Safety Concerns

Freeman Park, one of the last drive-on beach access points in North Carolina, is frequently closed during strong storm systems that cause erosion and tidal flooding. The town’s emergency management team continues to monitor surf conditions, which have produced waves up to 8 feet and wind gusts exceeding 30 mph.

Officials are urging residents and visitors to avoid entering the water and to stay clear of dune areas prone to collapse.

When Will the Park Reopen?

Town staff will reassess the situation once the storm system moves offshore and tides begin to normalize. There is currently no set timeline for reopening, though forecasters expect calmer weather and sunshine to return by early next week.

Visitors planning trips to Carolina Beach are encouraged to check for updates on the town’s official Facebook page or website before heading out.
