Tropical Waves Could Bring U.S. Coastal Impacts Next Week; Humberto and Imelda May Form

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — As Hurricane Gabrielle moves toward the Azores, forecasters are turning their attention to two tropical waves in the Atlantic that could become the next named storms of the 2025 season: Humberto and Imelda.

Both systems are tracking northwest toward the Southeast U.S. coast, with one in particular raising concern for potential impacts to North Carolina early next week.

Invest 94-L: The Greater U.S. Threat

Meteorologists say Invest 94-L has a 70% chance of development within the next week.

  • Currently producing scattered heavy rain across the Northern Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands,
  • Expected to slow as it approaches the Bahamas, where development into a depression is possible.
  • If strengthening continues, the system could move near or along the North Carolina coast early next week.

Invest 93-L: Closer to Becoming a Storm

The second system, Invest 93-L, is located east of the Lesser Antilles and may organize into a depression sooner than 94-L.

  • On a track similar to Hurricane Gabrielle, though farther east in the Atlantic.
  • Could threaten Bermuda as it develops.
  • Depending on timing, either system could take the name Humberto or Imelda, whichever intensifies first.

North Carolina Preparedness

With the historically busiest hurricane months still ahead, officials urge residents to stay prepared. Suggested steps include:

  • Reviewing evacuation routes and keeping an emergency plan.
  • Updating insurance coverage and safeguarding important documents.
  • Stocking an emergency kit with water, batteries, flashlights, and medications.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs through November 30, and experts warn that even developing systems can cause significant rainfall and flooding inland.
