North Carolina Coast: Thunderstorms Possible Sunday Afternoon Into Monday

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — Coastal North Carolina residents and visitors are enjoying warm, calm weather, but forecasters warn that thunderstorms may develop late Sunday and continue into Monday.

Sunny Start Before Storms

The National Weather Service in Newport reports that Friday and Saturday will remain mostly sunny, with highs in the low-to-mid 80s and light winds, offering favorable beach and outdoor conditions. By Sunday afternoon, however, a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected after 2 p.m., with the risk lingering into Sunday evening and possibly into Monday.

Areas Most Likely to See Storms

Communities including Newport, Morehead City, Havelock, and Beaufort should prepare for possible brief heavy downpours, lightning, and gusty winds. While severe weather is not guaranteed, forecasters caution that outdoor activities, especially along U.S. 70 and the Crystal Coast beaches, may need adjustments.

Outlook Into Early Week

The unsettled weather could persist into Tuesday before conditions improve by midweek. Authorities urge drivers to use caution on slick roads and for residents to keep phones and devices charged in case of isolated power outages.
