North Carolina Weather Alert: Heavy Rain to Soak Raleigh’s I-40 Commute Tonight, Clearing by Wednesday
RALEIGH, N.C. — Drivers in central North Carolina should prepare for wet and hazardous commutes Tuesday evening, as heavy rain continues to move across Raleigh and surrounding areas.
Heavy Rain, Standing Water Expected
The National Weather Service in Raleigh reports that I-40 and I-440 could see standing water during peak travel hours, increasing the risk of hydroplaning.
Gusty north winds up to 25 mph will add to the difficulty of driving, with visibility reduced in heavy downpours. Motorists are advised to slow down, keep headlights on, and avoid sudden lane changes through the night.
Rain Totals and Clearing Skies
Rainfall totals are expected to reach half an inch to three-quarters of an inch by early Wednesday.
By mid-morning Wednesday, the system will move out, leaving behind partly cloudy skies and highs near 72 degrees. Winds will ease to about 9 mph from the northwest, giving commuters a much calmer trip.

- Thursday: Sunny, high 82, low 64
