South Carolina Confirms Third Measles Case Since July

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed a third measles case in the state since July, raising concern among health officials about the highly contagious virus.

New Case in Upstate Resident

The latest patient is an unvaccinated Upstate resident who recently traveled internationally to a country experiencing a measles outbreak. Officials confirmed the case through the state’s certified public health laboratory.

The individual is now isolating at home to prevent further spread. Health officials emphasized that the patient was not contagious during travel.

DPH Begins Contact Investigation

DPH has launched a contact investigation and is working to notify anyone who may have been exposed. State Epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell warned that measles can spread quickly and lead to severe complications, including hospitalization, long-term neurological effects, and even death.

“Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus that affects the respiratory tract, and can result in serious complications,” Dr. Bell said.

Importance of Vaccination

Health officials stress that vaccination is the most effective protection, with the MMR vaccine providing over 97% effectiveness. Children should receive two doses—one between 12 to 15 months and a second between 4 to 6 years old.

DPH also advises families traveling abroad to review their immunization records and, if necessary, get an early dose for children ages 6 to 12 months.

2025 Measles Cases in South Carolina

  • July: Two confirmed cases, with one linked as a close contact to the other.
  • September: A third case confirmed, not connected to the earlier cases.

This brings the state’s total to three measles cases in 2025.
