Kershaw County Fire and SC Forestry Crews Contain 10-Acre Brush Fire in Bethune
BETHUNE, S.C. — Firefighters in Kershaw County, with assistance from the South Carolina Forestry Commission, successfully contained a large brush fire Thursday evening that scorched approximately 10 acres of land.
Fire Reported on Newman Road
According to Fire Chief Matthew Bullard, Kershaw County Fire Service was dispatched around 6:30 p.m. to the 4600 block of Newman Road after reports of flames spreading across the brush.
Crews worked for several hours to contain the fire, which was officially under control later that night.
“Our crews are headed home and will continue to monitor tomorrow,” Chief Bullard said after the fire was secured.
Cause Linked to Downed Power Line
Investigators believe the blaze started after a downed power line from a broken pole sparked the dry brush.
To aid in containment, SC Forestry deployed two bulldozers to establish fire lines, preventing the flames from spreading further into nearby wooded areas and properties.
Community Relief After Containment
Local residents expressed relief that the fire was quickly managed before it could threaten homes or farmland. Fire officials confirmed no structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.
With dry conditions persisting across South Carolina, officials urge residents to stay alert to fire risks, especially in rural areas where downed power lines and equipment failures can quickly spark brush fires.
