Reimbursement Applications Open for Private Road Repairs After Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina
BOONE, N.C. — Residents in Western North Carolina can now apply for reimbursements to help cover the cost of repairing private roads and bridges damaged by Hurricane Helene.
Program Offers Up to 50% Coverage
The state announced that eligible individuals in disaster-declared counties — including Watauga, Ashe, and Wilkes — can receive up to 50 percent reimbursement for documented repair costs.
The funding comes from a $25 million program created earlier this year to restore access to private property for residents who lost crucial connections due to Helene’s damage.
Application and Review Process
Applicants have six months to apply for assistance. To qualify, they must provide documentation of their repair costs, and an on-site review will be required before funds are awarded.
Officials said the goal is to ensure homeowners and families in hard-hit areas can safely access their homes, farms, and businesses as recovery continues.
Lingering Impact of Hurricane Helene
Helene, which tore through the Appalachian region last fall, left behind washed-out roads, collapsed bridges, and ravines that cut off entire communities. For many families, private roads are the only access routes to their property, making these reimbursements critical for daily life and economic recovery.
The state urges eligible residents to begin the application process as soon as possible to avoid delays in review and reimbursement.
