Caribou Weather Alert: Thunderstorms With Dangerous Lightning Threaten North Woods Until Sunset
CARIBOU, Maine — Northern Maine is under threat this afternoon as slow-moving thunderstorms bring cloud-to-ground lightning and heavy rain to the Allagash, North Woods, and Moosehead regions, just west and north of the I-95 corridor.
Areas Most at Risk
The National Weather Service in Caribou warns that storms will continue until sunset Wednesday, with the greatest impacts across the Central Highlands, Baxter Region, and surrounding gravel and dirt roads. Forecasters caution that downpours could make travel slick and create minor flooding hazards.
Cities including Fort Kent, Clayton Lake, and St. Pamphile are under the highest threat window until 7 p.m. Dangerous lightning remains the top concern.
“When thunder roars, head indoors,” NWS meteorologists emphasized.
Travel and Power Concerns
Travelers are being advised to avoid non-essential driving in rural areas where runoff could lead to hazardous conditions. Officials also warn that power outages may occur in isolated areas due to lightning strikes.
What Comes Next
Storms are expected to weaken after sunset, but additional scattered showers could develop Thursday morning. Residents are urged to monitor updated advisories from NWS Caribou for the latest developments.
