Bodies of Two Women Found Along Rural Road in Sumter County, South Carolina

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities are investigating a double homicide after the bodies of two women were discovered in a rural clearing near Richbow Road in the Rembert area, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Discovery in a Remote Area

Deputies responded to the scene around 1:17 p.m. on August 8 after a landowner found the bodies in a clearing off the road. Authorities say it appears the victims were placed at the location rather than dying where they were found.

The victims have been identified as 38-year-old Kristen N. Grissom of North Charleston and 35-year-old Christine Marie McAbee of Walterboro.

Authorities Say Incident Appears Isolated

Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis stated that investigators believe the case is isolated and that there is no known danger to the public. However, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been called in to assist with the investigation.

“We have begun our investigation, and we will have to wait until we have the results of the autopsies to know more,” Dennis said. “In the meantime, we cannot speculate.”

Cause of Death Pending Autopsy

Officials say autopsy results will determine both the cause and approximate time of death for the two women. Investigators are currently gathering evidence and interviewing individuals who may have information about the case.

Anyone with tips is urged to contact the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 436-2000.
