South Carolina Officials Break Ground on New HWY 11 Welcome Center
FAIR PLAY, S.C. — State leaders and community officials gathered Friday for the symbolic groundbreaking of the new South Carolina Welcome Center along Interstate 85, a major gateway for motorists entering the Palmetto State from Georgia. The $7.4 million project promises a modern facility that reflects the scenic and cultural offerings of the region.
A Gateway Closer to Lake Hartwell
According to WGOG News, the new Welcome Center will be located closer to Lake Hartwell than the current facility on Highway 11, giving visitors a preview of Oconee County’s natural beauty before they even reach their destination.
Duane Parrish, Director of South Carolina Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, said the facility will showcase the state’s diverse attractions. Among its standout features will be a water display that highlights Oconee County’s many rivers, lakes, and waterfalls.
State Senator Thomas Alexander praised the design for honoring the county’s defining waterways, which play a vital role in its identity and tourism industry.
Replacing a 56-Year-Old Facility
The current Welcome Center was originally built in 1969 and last received upgrades in 1996, ahead of the Atlanta Olympic Games. Project Manager Kevin Kibler said the new facility will be “completely different” in both style and amenities, offering a more inviting design for travelers.
Once construction is complete — expected to take over a year — the old building will be demolished to make room for additional parking space.
Economic and Tourism Impact
Officials believe the project will have a positive economic impact on the surrounding communities by encouraging longer stays and boosting tourism revenue. By providing modern rest areas, informational resources, and visual displays of the state’s attractions, the center aims to become more than just a quick pit stop — it will serve as a gateway experience for all visitors entering from the I-85 corridor.
The contractor for the project, a Gaffney-based construction company, is expected to work closely with local tourism boards to ensure the center reflects the state’s cultural heritage and natural landscapes.
The new HWY 11 Welcome Center represents more than a physical upgrade — it’s a strategic investment in South Carolina’s tourism future, ensuring travelers get their first taste of the Palmetto State’s charm the moment they cross the border.
