LEXINGTON COUNTY, South Carolina — A quiet summer afternoon turned dangerous on Tuesday when a lightning strike at Dominion Beach Park, near the Lake Murray Dam, injured 20 people — including 12 children, officials confirmed.
Emergency crews respond to sudden lightning strike
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. when a fast-moving storm rolled through Lexington County. First responders from the Lexington County Fire Service, Irmo Fire District, Lexington County EMS, and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the scene after a reported electrocution related to a lightning strike.
According to Vanessa Diaz, Public Information Officer for Lexington County, the injured included eight adults and twelve children.
12 people hospitalized, others treated at scene
Of the 20 people injured, 12 were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The remaining eight were treated at the park by emergency medical personnel.
Authorities confirmed that all victims are expected to recover, bringing some relief after the terrifying ordeal.
Dominion Beach Park to reopen after safety checks
