13 Tornadoes Confirmed Across Illinois Including EF-2 in Lena and Multiple EF-1s Hitting Bloomington and Normal Pushing State Yearly Total to 65

ILLINOIS — A breaking update from NWS survey teams confirms 13 tornadoes have now been verified across Illinois from Friday’s major severe weather outbreak, pushing the state’s yearly tornado total to 65. Forecasters warned the number will grow substantially as additional survey teams complete assessments across townships that reported damage but have not yet been officially confirmed.

Three additional tornadoes were confirmed in border counties, bringing the broader regional total to 20 confirmed tornadoes so far from Friday’s historic outbreak.

Full List of Confirmed Illinois Tornadoes

Survey teams have confirmed the following tornadoes across the state. Downs-Ellsworth was struck by an EF-1 with 100 mph winds, while Normal saw an EF-1 with 110 mph winds. Bloomington recorded two separate tornadoes — the first an EF-1 at 100 mph and the second an EF-1 reaching 110 mph. McLean-Livingston was hit by an EF-1 at 90 mph, and Adam County confirmed an EF-1 at 97 mph.

Harrison, Roscoe, and Pecatonica all confirmed additional tornadoes, with Pecatonica rated EF-Unknown pending further analysis. Lena recorded the strongest tornado of the entire outbreak — an EF-2. Communities including Lexington, Towanda, and Stanford have confirmed damage but ratings are still pending completion of survey assessments.

EF-2 in Lena the Strongest Confirmed Tornado

The EF-2 tornado confirmed in Lena stands as the most powerful twister from Friday’s Illinois outbreak confirmed so far. An EF-2 produces winds between 111 and 135 mph, capable of destroying well-constructed homes, snapping large trees at the trunk, and generating dangerous airborne debris across a wide damage path.

As survey teams continue working through the affected areas, it remains possible that additional stronger tornadoes could be confirmed or that existing ratings could be upgraded as more detailed damage assessments are completed in the coming days.

More Confirmations Expected as Surveys Continue

With many townships still awaiting official survey confirmation, the final Illinois tornado count from Friday’s outbreak is expected to climb significantly beyond the current total of 13. Forecasters specifically noted that residents should not be surprised if their community has not yet appeared on the confirmed list, as survey teams are working systematically through a wide geographic area.

Residents with property damage from Friday’s tornadoes should document all destruction thoroughly and contact their insurance providers immediately to begin the claims process.
