Multiple Rounds of Snow Forecast to Impact Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine With Totals Up to 12 Inches in Some Areas

UNITED STATES — Several rounds of accumulating snow are expected to sweep across the Midwest and Northeast this week, bringing totals ranging from 1 to 12 inches across Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Forecast models show two primary systems, with the first round stronger than the second but both contributing to a cold and snowy week across the region.

First Round Brings Heavier Snowfall From the Upper Midwest Into the Great Lakes

Meteorologists report that the first wave of snow, expected between Tuesday and Wednesday, will drop the most significant accumulations across:

  • Minnesota and Wisconsin: 3–5 inches
  • Michigan (including Alpena and Detroit): 5–8 inches
  • Western and Central New York (Buffalo to Binghamton): 8–12 inches
  • Ohio and Pennsylvania (Cleveland to Pittsburgh): 3–5 inches
  • New England states including Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine: 1–5 inches

These totals are expected to create slick roadways, reduced visibility, and slow travel during peak commute periods across the Great Lakes and Northeast.

Notably, Chicago, Illinois — which already has 17.1 inches of snow for the season, nearly matching last year’s total — is expected to pick up additional light-to-moderate accumulations.

Second Round Brings Lighter Snow but Widespread Coverage

A weaker system arriving Thursday night into Saturday morning will bring another blanket of light snow across:

  • Iowa and Minnesota
  • Wisconsin and Illinois
  • Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio
  • Western Pennsylvania and Western New York

While totals in the second round will generally be lighter, the combination of back-to-back systems will reinforce cold temperatures and persistent snow cover across much of the northern United States.

Even minor accumulations may cause travel disruptions, especially overnight and during early morning hours.

Cold Pattern Likely to Continue Through the Week

Meteorologists note that the region remains in a cold, active pattern, with frequent disturbances moving through the Midwest and Northeast. Continued cloud cover and periodic snowfall will keep temperatures below normal for many locations.

Travelers across interstates I-90, I-94, I-80, and I-70 should prepare for intermittent delays, slick surfaces, and sudden drops in visibility.

Forecasters will continue updating snowfall projections as the systems evolve.
