Two Killed After Being Swept Away in Nash County Flash Floods

NASH COUNTY, N.C. – Two people were killed Wednesday afternoon after flash floods swept their vehicle into a ravine along Highway 581 in Nash County, just outside Raleigh.

Authorities identified the victims as 24-year-old Lottie Alston and 55-year-old Raymond Evans, both of Louisburg, North Carolina.

Vehicle Swept Into Deep, Fast-Moving Waters

According to the Spring Hope Police Department, the pair’s minivan was carried into a ravine where water was rushing over six feet deep. Responders arrived shortly after 2 p.m. and found Alston on the roof of the vehicle.

As rescuers attempted to reach her, she fell into the floodwaters and was swept away. Evans was also carried downstream by the strong current.

Rescue Attempts Hampered by Dangerous Conditions

Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said one first responder became stranded during the rescue attempt and had to be saved by colleagues.

Lt. Jason Leary, who was the second officer on the scene, said he called for a fire truck ladder and tried to calm Alston, but the water rose too quickly. He attempted to grab her in the current but was unable to reach her.

“I have not seen floods like that since Hurricane Floyd in this area,” Leary said. “It was amazing how fast it came.”

Widespread Flooding Across County

Between 4 and 6 inches of rain fell in the Spring Hope area on Wednesday. Flash flood warnings remained in effect until 7 p.m., with at least three wrecks and seven flooded roads reported in Nash County.

Sheriff Stone urged residents to never attempt to cross flooded roads, warning that even minor blockages can quickly transform low areas into dangerous flood zones.
