Strong Storms Cause Flooded Roads, Downed Trees Across Metro Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA – A powerful wave of severe storms swept through metro Atlanta on Tuesday evening, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous conditions that caused major damage across the region.

Smyrna Home Severely Damaged by Falling Tree

In Smyrna, a massive tree crashed into a home on Ivy Spring Drive as storms intensified. The homeowner, who was sitting on her living room couch at the time, managed to escape injury as the tree tore through the house, destroying parts of the roof, flattening the fence, and puncturing exterior walls. An upstairs window was also shattered in the impact.

Tree Risks Rising in Georgia’s Climate

Local contractor Livinus Elias, who responded to board up the damage, explained that Georgia’s clay soil causes tree roots to grow outward rather than deep into the ground. This makes trees more prone to toppling during high winds.

“It’s very risky to keep trees around your house,” Elias warned. “In Georgia, we have a lot of clay, so the trees don’t go too deep into the soil… When the storm comes in, trouble starts.”

He added that older trees are especially vulnerable, as rot and water damage can weaken them without homeowners even realizing the danger.

Flooded Roads Create Traffic Hazards

The storms also caused flash flooding near Howell Mill Road on Chattahoochee Avenue, where roads were inundated and traffic was brought to a standstill. Some vehicles were left nearly submerged in the water.

Despite the destruction, no injuries were reported in the Smyrna incident.
