Strong Santa Ana Winds Expected Saturday Across Southern California: 50 MPH Gusts Possible

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — Meteorologists have issued a Santa Ana Wind Watch for Saturday, warning residents across Southern California to prepare for gusts between 30 and 50 mph. The National Weather Force says the strongest winds will impact Ventura County, Santa Clarita Valley, Orange County, and the Inland Empire, as well as all western mountain slopes.

Wind Gusts May Cause Power Outages and Downed Trees

According to meteorologist Raiden Storm, the upcoming wind event is being fueled by an upper-level low drifting southward, which will accelerate dry air down the mountain slopes into the Los Angeles Basin.

“Due to the rain, trees and powerlines will come down,” Storm said. “Any plans in these zones will be met with these winds.”

The Santa Ana winds, known for their dry and powerful gusts, are expected to peak late Saturday morning through the afternoon. These winds can create hazardous driving conditions, especially along mountain passes and coastal highways, and increase fire danger in areas with dry vegetation.

Impacted Areas

Residents across the following regions should be prepared for strong wind gusts and blowing debris:

  • Ventura County (VT)
  • Santa Clarita Valley (SCV)
  • Inland Empire (IE)
  • Orange County (OC)
  • Western mountain slopes of Los Angeles County

Localized gusts could reach up to 50 mph, particularly in canyons and elevated terrain.

Safety Precautions

Authorities advise residents to:

  • Secure outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash bins.
  • Use caution when driving high-profile vehicles on open roads.
  • Stay alert for possible power outages caused by downed lines.
  • Avoid outdoor burning or use of open flames during peak wind hours.

Looking Ahead

The winds are expected to gradually weaken by late Saturday night as the upper-level system shifts eastward. Cooler temperatures will follow, bringing a calmer start to the week.
