South Carolina Now Allows Debit Card Use for Lottery Tickets

COLUMBIA, SC — As of July 1, South Carolina residents can now purchase lottery tickets using debit cards, ending the long-standing cash-only restriction.

The change, enacted by the South Carolina Education Lottery, brings the state in line with national trends. Previously, only Tennessee and Wyoming shared South Carolina’s limitation on cash-only ticket sales.

Revenue Boost Expected from Policy Shift

According to state lottery officials, this shift is expected to generate an additional $50 million in annual revenue, helping to expand key programs like:

  • College scholarships

  • K-12 school choice funding

The ability to use debit cards is projected to increase accessibility and sales, particularly for younger or cashless consumers, as reported by WCBD News 2.

Retailer Discretion and Responsible Gaming Reminder

While debit cards are now authorized, participating retailers have the option to accept or reject this new payment method at their individual locations.

The South Carolina Education Lottery also reminded the public to play responsibly, emphasizing that credit cards, checks, and other forms of payment remain prohibited.
