One Killed in Fiery Crash on I-40 East Ramp to Wade Avenue in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. — A deadly crash shut down a major Raleigh interchange Sunday morning after a car caught fire on the I-40 East exit ramp to Wade Avenue, leaving one person dead.

Crash and Fire Reported Sunday Morning

The incident happened around 10 a.m., when a vehicle traveling eastbound on I-40 crashed on the ramp to Wade Avenue and burst into flames.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) confirmed the fire, and live traffic cameras showed police blocking access to the ramp as congestion built along the interstate.

Police Investigation Underway

The Raleigh Police Department said it was a single-car crash and confirmed one fatality. No charges have been filed. The ramp will remain closed until investigators finish their work.

Authorities expect the ramp to reopen by Sunday afternoon, though delays are possible until the scene is cleared.

Impact on Drivers

The closure caused heavy backups as drivers sought alternate routes. Commuters were advised to check real-time traffic maps and allow for additional travel time while crews responded to the crash site.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not yet released the identity of the person who died.
