North Carolina Visitor Dies After Cliff Jumping Accident on Kaua‘i’s South Shore

POʻIPŪ, Hawai‘i — A North Carolina man has died after a cliff jumping accident at Keoneloa Bay, also known as Shipwreck Beach, on Kaua‘i’s South Shore.

Authorities identified the victim as Jerome Hill, 39, who was pulled from the water Thursday evening after struggling to swim following a jump from the popular cliffside.

Rescue Efforts by Bystanders

Emergency officials said first responders were alerted around 6:30 p.m. to reports of a distressed swimmer in the water. Witnesses at the beach swam out to assist Hill and successfully brought him back to shore.

Onshore, CPR was immediately performed while waiting for the Kaua‘i Fire Department and American Medical Response teams to arrive. Despite extended life-saving efforts, Hill remained in critical condition.

Pronounced Dead at Hospital

Hill was transported to Wilcox Medical Center, where doctors continued emergency treatment. He was later pronounced dead.

Officials confirmed that an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death. At this time, foul play is not suspected.
