North Carolina Hurricane Season: Disturbance Has 80% Chance of Developing by Next Week

WILMINGTON, N.C. — A tropical disturbance forming in the eastern Atlantic Ocean is being closely monitored by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) as it tracks westward, carrying a high potential to develop into a tropical depression within days.

80% Chance of Development

As of Wednesday, the system was located a few hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, producing clusters of showers and thunderstorms. The NHC currently gives it a 40% chance of development within 48 hours and an 80% chance within seven days.

If it strengthens further, the disturbance could become the seventh named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.

Potential Track Across the Atlantic

Forecasters expect the system to move west to west-northwest at about 15 mph across the Atlantic through the weekend. Its potential path could bring impacts to both the U.S. East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico, though meteorologists stress it is too early to pinpoint landfall locations.

“Residents along the East Coast and Gulf Coast should remain vigilant as the storm progresses,” the National Weather Service in Wilmington cautioned.

A Busy Hurricane Season

This year’s Atlantic hurricane season has already produced six named storms, including Major Hurricane Erin in August, which reached Category 3 strength. With September marking the peak of hurricane season, forecasters warn that additional systems are highly likely in the coming weeks.

Preparedness Urged

Emergency officials recommend coastal residents take time now to:

  • Review hurricane preparedness plans.
  • Restock emergency supplies such as food, water, and batteries.
  • Stay tuned to official forecasts for potential watches and warnings.

“Preparedness is critical during September, when hurricane activity is at its highest,” officials reminded.
