La Niña: Heavy Snow and Deep Freeze

La Niña 2026: Heavy Snow and Deep Freeze Expected for Idaho and Montana

BOISE, Idaho — Winter 2026 is shaping up to be a cold and snow-packed season for much of the Northern Rockies, as a developing La Niña pattern strengthens over the Pacific Ocean, according to the National Weather Service in Missoula.

Arctic Cold and Frequent Snow Systems Ahead

Meteorologists say northwest flow aloft will steer multiple clipper systems into the region, building a deep snowpack from the Bitterroot Range to Glacier National Park. Temperatures could drop 3 to 6 degrees below normal, with the coldest outbreaks expected in January and February, according to a Country Herald report.

The pattern is expected to deliver persistent snowfall, especially across western Montana and central Idaho, where accumulations could climb above seasonal averages.

Ranchers, Road Crews, and Residents Prepare

Local ranchers are already preparing for early livestock sheltering and frozen water supplies, while highway crews along I-90 and U.S. 93 brace for prolonged plowing operations.

Utility providers are also warning residents to insulate exposed pipes and check backup generators as subzero nights return later this winter.

“This La Niña setup looks like a classic Northern Rockies winter — cold, snowy, and relentless,” forecasters said. “Travel could be difficult for weeks at a time.”

Avalanche and Safety Concerns

With accumulating snow in the high country, avalanche risks are expected to rise by midseason. Outdoor enthusiasts are urged to monitor avalanche advisories and check conditions before heading into mountain terrain.

Emergency officials recommend keeping vehicle emergency kits, dressing in layers, and limiting travel during major snow events.

Looking Ahead

While each La Niña winter varies, historical data shows this pattern consistently brings above-average snowfall to much of Idaho and Montana, with lingering cold into early March.

Forecasters say this year’s weak La Niña could still pack a punch — delivering a true winter experience across the Northern Rockies.
