Elderly Woman Targeted by Thieves Who Stole Necklace Containing Her Daughter’s Ashes
CALIFORNIA — An elderly woman in East Los Angeles is asking for the public’s help after two thieves tricked her during a conversation and stole a gold necklace containing her late daughter’s ashes.
The Distracting Conversation That Enabled the Theft
According to a report from KTLA, the victim, Esther Guerrero, said the suspects approached her outside her home and initiated a friendly conversation. While speaking with her, one of the individuals allegedly reached toward her neck under the guise of adjusting jewelry and quietly unclasped her necklace without her noticing.
Guerrero said she had no idea the necklace had been removed until after the suspects left, turning what seemed like a harmless interaction into a deeply hurtful crime.
Necklace Held Ashes of Her Daughter, a Retired Sheriff’s Deputy
The stolen necklace was more than sentimental—it contained the ashes of Guerrero’s daughter, who served as a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy and passed away earlier this year in May. Guerrero said the necklace was one of her final physical connections to her daughter, and its loss has devastated her family.
Authorities say the suspects appeared to intentionally target Guerrero, using distraction tactics commonly seen in thefts involving elderly victims.
Authorities Ask for Public’s Help Identifying the Suspects
Law enforcement officials are now urging residents in the area to come forward with any information. Detectives believe surveillance footage, witness reports, or neighborhood cameras may help identify the individuals responsible.
Guerrero hopes that public awareness will lead to the necklace being found and returned. “They didn’t just steal jewelry—they stole a piece of my daughter,” she said in the interview.
