Driver in Fatal I-805 Crash Charged With Murder After High-Speed Collision
CHULA VISTA, CALIFORNIA — A 22-year-old San Diego man is facing murder charges after authorities say he intentionally caused a deadly multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 805 that killed a motorcyclist and injured several others Monday night.
Crash Began With Alleged Intentional Collision
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash unfolded just after 8 p.m. Monday on the southbound side of I-805 near Telegraph Canyon Road. Witnesses reported that the driver, behind the wheel of a red 2023 Tesla Model Y, was speeding when he “intentionally drove into the rear” of a gray 2025 BMW motorcycle.
The motorcycle rider, later identified as 53-year-old Jorge Uribe of Chula Vista, was killed on impact. His identity was confirmed by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Tesla Then Hit Truck With Six Occupants
After striking the motorcycle, the Tesla continued forward and collided with a black 2012 Ram 1500 truck carrying six people, all of whom sustained minor to moderate injuries. They were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The Tesla driver attempted to flee the scene, but was apprehended by CHP officers shortly after the incident.
Murder Charge and Ongoing Investigation
The driver, whose name has not yet been released, is now facing multiple felony charges, including murder. CHP officials emphasized the seriousness of the case, with Captain M. Vargas stating:
“We owe it to the victims and their families to ensure that all facts are uncovered, and justice is served.”
The CHP Border Division’s Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. The agency is also reviewing video evidence obtained from a witness’s dashcam. That footage reportedly shows the Tesla reaching at least 66 mph prior to the crash. Some reports suggest speeds may have peaked closer to 100 mph.
Highway Shutdown Caused Major Disruptions
First responders remained at the crash site for over 12 hours, with the highway not fully cleared until around noon Tuesday. The extended closure caused significant delays for morning commuters throughout Chula Vista and the surrounding areas.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Border Division’s Major Crimes Unit at 858-944-6300.
