Cornelius Police Officer Killed in Concord Bike Crash While Riding With Wife

CONCORD, N.C. — A Cornelius police officer was killed Saturday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle with his wife, the department confirmed.

Officer Identified as Gabriel Stainback

Authorities said the victim was Officer Gabriel Stainback, who had recently joined the Cornelius Police Department. Stainback was hired through the Basic Law Enforcement Training program and was officially sworn in as an officer in December 2024.

The department noted that Stainback had only recently married, making the tragedy especially devastating for his family and colleagues.

Police Department Statement

In a statement released Saturday evening, the Cornelius Police Department expressed its grief:

“Our deepest condolences are with his family and our entire CPD family. Please keep them in your thoughts during this unimaginable tragedy.”

As of Sunday, further details about the crash — including information about the driver — had not been released.

Community Impact

News of Stainback’s death has shaken Cornelius and neighboring Concord, where the crash occurred. Local agencies and community members have extended support to his family, while law enforcement officers across the region are mourning the loss of a young colleague early in his career.
