Rising Water Levels Alert

North Carolina Weather Alert: Coastal Flooding Threatens Wilmington Roads Through Friday

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Residents along the Cape Fear River are being urged to use caution Friday as rising tides bring standing water and traffic delays to downtown Wilmington and surrounding neighborhoods. The National Weather Service (NWS) says a Coastal Flood Advisory will remain in effect through 4 p.m. Friday, with water levels reaching up to one foot above normal.

Rising Tides Bring Minor Flooding

Forecasters warn that low-lying streets near the riverfront — including Battleship Road, Water Street, and River Road — may flood during midday high tide. “Drivers should avoid flooded lanes and never drive around barricades,” the NWS Wilmington office said Friday morning.

Flooding is expected to be most visible in southern New Hanover County, particularly near River Road Park and along Route 133 near Mallory Creek, where tidal creeks often overflow during elevated water levels.

Showers, Winds to Continue Through Saturday

The weather service said light showers and breezy northeast winds between 10 and 20 mph will continue through Saturday, prolonging minor flooding in sensitive coastal areas. Residents are encouraged to move vehicles off low-lying roads, secure decorations, and protect outdoor property from water damage.

“Even a small amount of saltwater can cause lasting corrosion or electrical damage,” officials warned, urging homeowners to prepare for additional high tide cycles later Friday evening.

Sunny, Dry Weather Returns Early Next Week

Meteorologists say the weekend will end on a brighter note, with drier air and mild fall temperatures returning by Sunday and Monday. Skies will clear, humidity will drop, and conditions will become ideal for outdoor events, pumpkin patches, and fall activities heading into mid-October.

Five-Day Wilmington Forecast

  • Friday: 73°/62° – Cloudy with scattered showers; minor tidal flooding near downtown.
  • Saturday: 72°/64° – Showers likely; gusty NE winds up to 20 mph.
  • Sunday: 74°/58° – Breezy, partly sunny; cooler by evening.
