Drivers Can Renew Non-REAL ID Licenses Online

North Carolina Drivers Can Now Renew Non-REAL ID Licenses Online for a Second Time

RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) has announced that drivers can now renew their non-REAL ID driver licenses online for a second consecutive time, expanding digital access to essential DMV services.

New Rule Aims to Cut Wait Times

The new policy, which takes effect immediately, is part of the NCDMV’s ongoing effort to streamline customer service and reduce congestion at local DMV offices. Officials say the change could prevent as many as 400,000 in-person transactions from clogging up lines across the state.

Residents previously were required to visit a DMV office after one online renewal, but the latest update allows eligible drivers to renew twice online in a row before needing an in-person visit.

“This change is designed to make things faster and more convenient for North Carolina drivers,” the agency said in a statement.

Future Updates Coming

The NCDMV also plans to roll out additional improvements, including REAL ID renewals and teen license upgrades through its online platform. These upgrades are expected to further modernize the system and help the state keep pace with digital service demand.

Drivers can access the online renewal system and manage their credentials directly at NCDMV.gov.
