Escaped Monkey Struck by Car Days After Breaking Out of North Carolina Zoo
TROUTMAN, N.C. — A monkey that captured widespread attention after escaping from a North Carolina zoo has been struck by a car less than a week after breaking free, according to local animal services.
Escape From Zootastic Park
The animal, housed at Zootastic Park in Troutman, reportedly escaped on Wednesday, September 17, after prying apart wire bars and squeezing through. Zoo owner Scottie Brown confirmed it was the first time a monkey had managed to escape the facility.
Soon after the escape, a video of the animal climbing along power lines in the Troutman area surfaced online. The footage spread quickly, racking up more than 41,000 views and nearly 300 shares in less than two hours.
Struck by a Vehicle
On Tuesday, the monkey was struck by a vehicle. When officers arrived at the scene, the animal was still alive. Authorities transported it back to its owner, though no update has been released on its current condition.
Animal service officials have not said whether the monkey is receiving veterinary care or if additional safety measures will be put in place at Zootastic Park following the incident.
Owner’s Response
Brown said staff had been actively searching for the monkey since its disappearance, but by the time they reached the area where the video was taken, the animal had already moved on.
He acknowledged the incident raised concerns, but stressed that this was the first escape of its kind at the Troutman zoo.
Community members expressed worry about both public safety and the welfare of the animal, which had been loose in the area for several days before being hit by the car.
